Building a Safer Community Together: Your Role in Crime Prevention on the Kickapoo Reservation

The Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas Police Department is dedicated to protecting residents and ensuring a safe and secure community for everyone on the Reservation. We recognize that crime prevention is a team effort. By working together and taking proactive steps, we can make our neighborhoods less attractive to criminals and enhance everyone's safety.

Securing Your Castle:

Your home should be your sanctuary. Here are some simple but effective ways to deter burglars and protect your property:

  • Lock Up: It sounds obvious, but many burglaries happen because doors and windows are left unlocked. Always lock up, even if you're just stepping out for a few minutes.

  • Reinforce Entry Points: Make sure your doors are solid core and consider adding extra security measures like deadbolt locks and window reinforcements.

  • Light it Up: Well-lit homes are less appealing to criminals. Similarly, installing motion-activated lights around your property, especially near entry points, can be helpful in deterring burglars.

  • Don't Advertise: Avoid leaving boxes from recent purchases out on the curb. Break them down or conceal them in a recycling bin so others can not see them.

  • Out of Sight, Out of Mind: Keep valuables out of sight from windows and consider getting a safe for important documents and valuable items.

  • Landscaping Matters: Trim shrubs and other foliage around your home to eliminate hiding spots for potential intruders.

Eyes on the Street:

Be observant and aware of your surroundings. Here's how to recognize suspicious activity:

  • Unfamiliar Faces: Take note of people who seem out of place or are loitering in your neighborhood.

  • Unusual Vehicles: Pay attention to vehicles that are driving slowly, repeatedly coming through the area, or parked in unusual locations.

  • Strange Noises: Be alert to unusual sounds like breaking glass, loud banging, or someone attempting to force open a door or window.

  • Gut Feeling: Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors:

A strong community is a safe community. Here's how to work together:

  • Get to Know Your Neighbors: Introduce yourself to the people who live around you who you may not have met already. The better you know your neighbors, the easier it will be to spot suspicious activity.

  • Communicate: Share information about suspicious activity with your neighbors and encourage them to do the same.

  • Neighborhood Watch: Consider starting a Neighborhood Watch program. This organized effort can help deter crime and improve communication with law enforcement.

  • Report Suspicious Activity: Don't hesitate to call dispatch if you see something suspicious. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

Remember: KTIKPD is your partner in crime prevention. By working together and taking these proactive steps, we can create a safer and more secure community for everyone on the Kickapoo Reservation.
