The holidays are a time for celebration, but it's important to remember that celebrations and alcohol don't always mix well, especially when it comes to driving. The Kickapoo Tribe Police Department wants everyone to have a safe and enjoyable holiday season, which is why we're focusing on the importance of responsible alcohol consumption and the dangers of impaired driving.
Know the Facts:
Impaired Driving is Deadly: Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs significantly impairs your judgment, reaction time, and coordination, drastically increasing the risk of accidents.
Legal Consequences: Driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08% or higher is illegal in Kansas and can result in fines, license suspension, and even jail time.
It's Not Worth the Risk: Even a small amount of alcohol can affect your ability to drive safely. There is no safe way to drink and drive.
Plan Ahead for Safe Celebrations:
Designate a Driver: Before the festivities begin, choose a designated driver who will remain sober and responsible for getting everyone home safely.
Utilize Ride-Sharing Services: Take advantage of ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft, or call a taxi if the services are available in the area.
Host Responsibly: If you're hosting a gathering, offer non-alcoholic beverages and make sure your guests have a safe way to get home.
Intervene When Necessary: If you see someone who is impaired attempting to drive, take their keys and help them find a safe alternative.
Remember:
Buzzed Driving IS Drunk Driving: Even if you feel "slightly buzzed," you are still impaired and should not drive.
Medications and Driving: Some over-the-counter and prescription medications can impair your ability to drive. Always check labels and consult your doctor.
Leading by Example: Make responsible choices and encourage your friends and family to do the same.
This holiday season, let's celebrate responsibly and keep our roads safe. Make a plan, stick to it, and never get behind the wheel if you've been drinking.
Wishing you a safe and happy holiday season!
