Navigating the Rain: Safe Driving Tips for Wet Roads

Spring showers are just around the corner, and with them comes the potential for slick roads and hazardous driving conditions. At the Kickapoo Tribe Police Department, we want to help you stay safe behind the wheel, rain or shine. Here are some important tips for navigating wet roads:

Reduce Your Speed

Wet roads mean reduced traction. Slow down and increase your following distance to give yourself more time to react to unexpected situations.

Turn on Your Headlights

Rain can reduce visibility. Turn on your headlights to improve your own visibility and make it easier for other drivers to see you.

Avoid Cruise Control

Cruise control can be dangerous on wet roads. If your vehicle hydroplanes (loses contact with the road surface due to water), cruise control can cause you to accelerate unintentionally.

Beware of Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning can occur at speeds as low as 35 mph. If your vehicle hydroplanes:

  • Stay calm.

  • Ease your foot off the gas pedal.

  • Gently steer in the direction you want the vehicle to go.

  • Avoid braking suddenly.

Watch for Standing Water

Avoid driving through large puddles or areas of standing water if possible. You can't always gauge the depth, and you could damage your vehicle or lose control.

Be Cautious When Passing

When passing other vehicles in wet conditions, allow extra space and be aware of spray from their tires, which can reduce visibility.

Maintain Your Vehicle

  • Tires: Ensure your tires have adequate tread depth for proper grip.

  • Brakes: Make sure your brakes are in good working order.

  • Windshield Wipers: Replace worn wiper blades for optimal visibility.

Stay Alert and Focused

Avoid distractions like texting or talking on the phone. Pay attention to the road and be prepared for changing conditions.

If You Start to Skid

  • Stay calm.

  • Steer in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to go.

  • Avoid braking suddenly.

By following these tips and staying alert, you can navigate wet roads safely and arrive at your destination without incident.

Drive safe and stay dry!
