Ringing in the New Year Safely: Tips for a Secure and Festive New Year's Eve

As we prepare to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new, the Kickapoo Tribe Police Department wishes everyone a joyous and safe New Year's Eve. Whether you're attending a lively party or enjoying an evening at home, here are some tips to ensure your celebrations are memorable for all the right reasons.

If You're Heading Out:

  • Plan Ahead: If you'll be celebrating with alcohol, designate a sober driver or arrange for alternative transportation like a ride-sharing service or taxi. Never drink and drive.

  • Travel with Friends: There's safety in numbers. Stick with your group and watch out for each other.

  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Pay attention to your surroundings and be mindful of your belongings. Don't leave drinks unattended or accept drinks from strangers.

  • Pace Yourself: Don't overindulge in alcohol. Drink plenty of water throughout the evening.

  • Trust Your Instincts: If a situation or person makes you feel uncomfortable, remove yourself.

Celebrating at Home:

  • Guest Safety: If you're hosting a party, ensure your guests have a safe way to get home. Offer non-alcoholic beverages and be a responsible host.

  • Fireworks Safety: If you're using fireworks, follow all safety guidelines and local ordinances. Never allow children to handle fireworks.

  • Secure Your Home: If you are out celebrating, ensure your doors and windows are locked.

On the Roads:

  • Stay Alert: Be extra cautious on the roads, as there may be more impaired drivers on New Year's Eve.

  • Drive Defensively: Be prepared for unexpected behavior from other drivers. Maintain a safe following distance and avoid distractions.

  • Report Impaired Drivers: If you suspect someone is driving under the influence, report it to law enforcement immediately.

Additional Tips:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially if you're consuming alcohol.

  • Be a Good Neighbor: Keep an eye out for your neighbors and report any suspicious activity.

By following these simple tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable New Year's Eve for yourself and those around you.

From all of us at the Kickapoo Tribe Police Department, Happy New Year!
