The Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas Police Department is dedicated to keeping our community safe, and that includes on the roads. We see firsthand the devastating consequences of traffic accidents, and we urge all drivers to prioritize safety. Whether you're a tribal member or just passing through the area, remember that responsible driving saves lives.
One of the key initiatives we support is the Kansas Department of Transportation's (KDOT) Safety Through Enhanced Patrols (STEP) program. STEP combines increased enforcement with public awareness campaigns to tackle dangerous driving behaviors. Why is this so important? Let's break it down:
Impaired Driving: Alcohol and drugs impair judgment, reaction time, and coordination – all crucial for safe driving. Driving under the influence puts everyone on the road at risk.
Distracted Driving: In the age of smartphones, distracted driving is a major threat. Texting, calling, or even just fiddling with the radio takes your focus away from the road and can have deadly consequences.
Speeding: Speed limits are there for a reason. Speeding reduces your ability to control your vehicle and increases the severity of an accident.
Seat Belts: Wearing a seat belt drastically increases your chances of surviving a crash. It's a simple action that can save your life.
The STEP program allows us to increase our enforcement efforts in these key areas. By having more officers on patrol, we can:
Deter dangerous driving: Knowing there's an increased police presence encourages drivers to be more cautious.
Catch offenders: Increased patrols mean a higher likelihood of catching those who break traffic laws, potentially preventing accidents before they happen.
Educate the public: Our officers use traffic stops as an opportunity to educate drivers about safe driving practices.
Traffic safety is a shared responsibility. We urge everyone to do their part by:
Always wearing your seat belt.
Never driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Putting away your phone and avoiding distractions.
Obeying speed limits.
Being aware of your surroundings and other drivers.
Let's work together to make our roads safer for everyone. Remember, every life is precious. Drive responsibly.
