Thanksgiving is a time for feasting, family, and gratitude. But amidst the excitement of the holiday, it's important to keep safety in mind. Here at the Kickapoo Tribe Police Department, we want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving. Here are some tips to help you do just that:

Travel Safely:

  • Buckle Up: Whether you're traveling across town or across the state, make sure everyone in the vehicle is buckled up.

  • Stay Alert:  Drowsy driving is a major cause of accidents. Get plenty of rest before your trip, and take breaks if you feel tired.

  • Plan Ahead: If you're traveling a long distance, plan your route in advance and allow extra time for traffic.

  • Winter Weather Ready: Kansas weather can be unpredictable. Be prepared for potential winter weather conditions by checking the forecast and packing an emergency kit.

Feasting Safely:

  • Fire Safety First:  Cooking is the leading cause of home fires on Thanksgiving. Never leave cooking unattended, keep flammable items away from the stove, and make sure your smoke alarms are working.

  • Food Safety:  Properly handle and store food to prevent foodborne illnesses. Thaw your turkey safely, cook it to the correct temperature, and refrigerate leftovers promptly.

  • Sharp Objects: Keep knives and other sharp objects out of reach of children.

Home Safety:

  • Secure Your Home: If you're traveling for Thanksgiving, make sure your home is secure. Lock all doors and windows, and consider using timers for lights.

  • Be a Good Neighbor:  Keep an eye out for suspicious activity in your neighborhood and report it to the police.

Enjoy Responsibly:

  • Don't Drink and Drive: If you'll be consuming alcohol, designate a driver or use a ride-sharing service.

By following these simple tips, you can help ensure a safe and happy Thanksgiving for yourself and your loved ones.

From all of us at the Kickapoo Tribe Police Department, we wish you a happy and safe Thanksgiving!
