As winter sets in across Kansas, it's important to be prepared for the challenges that come with colder temperatures and potential snow and ice. Here at the Kickapoo Tribe Police Department, we want to ensure everyone stays safe throughout the season. Here are some tips to help you prepare for winter weather, both on the roads and at home:
Vehicle and Road Safety:
Winterize Your Vehicle: Before the first snow falls, make sure your vehicle is ready for winter conditions. Check your battery, tires, antifreeze, and windshield wipers. Consider having a mechanic give your car a thorough inspection.
Pack an Emergency Kit: Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle, including a blanket, extra warm clothes, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, jumper cables, and non-perishable snacks.
Drive for the Conditions: Adjust your driving to the weather conditions. Reduce your speed, increase your following distance, and be especially cautious on bridges and overpasses, which freeze first.
Know When to Stay Put: If conditions are hazardous, avoid driving altogether if possible. If you must travel, let someone know your route and expected arrival time.
Home Safety:
Prevent Frozen Pipes: Insulate pipes in unheated areas and let faucets drip slightly during extremely cold weather.
Heating Safety: Have your heating system inspected and serviced annually. Keep flammable materials away from heaters and fireplaces. Never use a stove or oven to heat your home.
Carbon Monoxide Awareness: Install carbon monoxide detectors and ensure they are working properly. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly.
Be Prepared for Power Outages: Have flashlights and extra batteries readily available. If you use a generator, make sure it is properly ventilated to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Additional Tips:
Check on Neighbors: If you have elderly or vulnerable neighbors, check on them during periods of extreme cold.
Stay Informed: Pay attention to weather forecasts and warnings.
By taking these precautions and staying informed, you can help ensure a safe and comfortable winter season for yourself and your loved ones.
Stay warm and stay safe!
